How to Wear Leather (and Not Look Too Tough)

Easy ways to add a little edge to your wardrobe

A black leather jacket is practically a wardrobe essential. It makes everyone, regardless of age, size and shape, feel rock-star cool. Slip it on and your confidence soars. But don’t be a snob and get stuck on real leather. Try faux leather, or eco-friendly “vegan,” as it’s often called, which is newer, lighter, more supple (requiring no break-in period, unlike the real stuff), easier to wear and a lot less costly. At the same time, leather can send the wrong message and make women look harsh, not stylish. Here’s how to walk on the wild side.

1. Get the right kind of edge

A black leather jacket feels sexy, but finding one that’s not too tough is tough. It must hit the sweet spot between cool, classy and stylish, with a buttery soft texture and a fit that’s not too tight, too loose, oversized or bulky. Choose one that suits your taste. Biker styles with an asymmetric zip are the edgiest; moto styles with a band collar are still racy but not as rowdy; draped-collar jackets are subtly glam; and blazers have a don’t-mess-with-me style that’s classic and professional. Avoid a too-aggressive look by focusing on a sleek design that’s minus extra studs, fringe or quilting, and by pairing it with streamlined pieces like wide-leg pants, a skirt (pencil, pleated or midi) and your favorite jeans — never with other leather pieces.

2. Buy tailored leather basics

Another solution is to skip the jacket dilemma and head for faux leather dresses and skirts that look more fashionable, less fierce. Select neutrals like black, brown, caramel and beige that will mix and match easily with your existing wardrobe. Since faux leather is virtually season-less, stay with streamlined shifts and A-line dresses and midi skirts that will look as stylish with mules and sandals as they do with boots and booties now.

3. Choose suede instead

(Left to right) Abercrombie & Fitch Vegan Suede Moto Jacket in Light Brown ($120, abercrombie.com/shop/us); Jones New York Seam Detail Faux Suede Leggings in Cola ($90, nordstrom.com); Quince 100% Suede Biker Jacket in Brown ($150, onequince.com)

Abercrombie & Fitch; Nordstrom; Quince

Faux suede is a subtle alternative to faux leather. It still delivers that desirable “skin” look with a texture that’s more spicy than woven fabrics. In beauty terms, think of suede as eye shadow for your body, while leather is the cat eyeliner. Warm natural tones of beige and brown reveal the brushed nap better than black yet work with all other neutrals, including black, for a sophisticated effect.

4. Give black leather leggings a spin

Every woman who loves stretchy black leggings can wear these sassier ones that elevate the everyday basic to runway status. Avoid any possible tacky factor (and this is truly what mature women are wary of) with three tips: Choose a matte finish not a shiny or textured one; always pair leather leggings with long, relaxed tops and jackets that cover the crotch and rear; and add tall riding-style boots, lug-sole booties, chunky loafers or sneakers instead of stilettos and pumps. Balancing the skin-tight fit with a loose top and gritty footwear is what makes leather leggings contemporary and flattering.

5. Embrace color

Black leather — like dark nail polish — always projects a mysterious, slightly dangerous vibe. It’s not for everyone. You can still wear leather but modify the degree of “edge” by choosing softer colors, like muted gray, blue or butterscotch, or rich hues, like forest green or burgundy. Skip statement colors like red, pink, ivory or metallics, which can look costume-y and dated quickly.

6. Try leather pants

(Left to right) En Saison Lana Faux Leather Pants in Olive ($102, anthropologie.com); Gap Sky High Rise Faux-Leather Cheeky Straight Pants in Black ($71, gap.com); Lucy Paris Faux Leather Paperbag-Waist Pants in Cognac ($98, bloomingdales.com)

Leather pants in straight, pleated or flared styles are having a fashion moment right now. The more relaxed fit makes them a great choice for those resistant to leggings. Think of leather pants as a posh alternative to jeans but with enhanced 24/7 style opportunities. Just add any tee, sweater, shirt or blouse for a pulled-together look that’ll pivot from work to party, from dinner to coffee with the girls with extra flair and no fuss. They’re on their way to becoming a wardrobe “classic” that’ll stick around for years and are selling out fast as spring approaches, so grab a pair ASAP.

7. Opt for laid-back leather

A leather jacket not your thing? Are leather pants and skirts too dressy for your sneakers-with-everything lifestyle? No problem. Faux leather has pushed the boundaries of athleisure wear, too, with joggers, sweatshirts and shackets (shirt jackets) that give hoodies and very casual wardrobes a trendy spin. Just keep your go-to silhouettes and update the fabric.
